Review of 2013 and outlook for 2014: Stable and sustainable business

Trevira GmbH – business in 2013

Taken as a whole, business for fibre manufacturer Trevira was pleasing and stable in the year just passed. Steps taken to reorganise production structures and tighten up operations are taking effect, which can be seen in the fact that targets set for 2013 were in substance achieved. Not only had the company invested in consolidating in 2013, it launched growth projects at both production sites, especially in fibres. Performance for 2013 will be above the line both in turnover and in results, the outcome on the one hand of changes in the product mix, and on the other of good performance in volumes.

In the industrial applications field the position of Trevira is maintained by successful development work. It is also anticipated that products for technical uses and non-woven applications will continue to grow in importance for the future. In 2013 Trevira showed its colours in this important market at three trade fairs: Alongside the now traditional input at Techtextil Frankfurt, Trevira made a first appearance at Techtextil North America in Anaheim (California) and was also represented at Textile Solutions under the umbrella of the Hannover Messe. For non-wovens Index in Geneva is once again on the cards for 2014, while the company will be participating with filament products at the Composites JEC Europe trade fair in Paris.

For the New Year Trevira anticipates that the European market will recover and stabilise and that qualified export business will see further development. Throughout 2014 the process of internationalisation and the success of steps taken in recent years will underpin business in both fibres and filaments.
In future a key factor in Trevira business development will be further Internationalisation, especially into Asia, North and South America and the Near East. The emphasis will also be on new end uses, in industrial or technical applications, for example.

In 2014 the close cooperation with Indorama Ventures and Sinterama, the dedicated owners, will be entering its third year and is proceeding positively and smoothly. Trevira continues to be a sizeable and stable player in the polyester fibre market and is confident that goals set in 2014 will once again be achieved.

Trevira CS: business and activities 2013 – outlook 2014

Trevira CS is holding its ground in the slowly recovering European market – not least thanks to the high quality collections and international presence of fabric suppliers. Worldwide there is still great potential in business with flame retardant polyester fibres, which is why in 2013 the company once again initiated international events for and with partners in the chain, comprising yarn, manufacturers and dealers. These included the Trevira CS Jobber Day in New York and the Trevira CS China Day in Shanghai. Customers gave both events a very good reception. Some customer projects in the North American give positive signals, indicating that this market offers further growth potential for Trevira CS. There are opportunities in Asia, firstly in growing demand internally in the emerging countries and secondly they are to be found in an increased demand for European design and quality products. Here Trevira is placing particular emphasis on strengthening demand in the Chinese hotel market, in order to support European manufacturers in marketing their products.

For the second time MoOD in Brussels saw the successful joint appearance of fabric makers and yarn producers from the Trevira CS Gold and Silver Club. Within the framework of Club services Trevira supported customers in numerous promotions and global events and in gaining international fire safety certificates. This close collaboration has shown itself to be well worthwhile – on the one hand it strengthens the commitment of all sides to each other and its multiplier effect  also raises awareness of the Trevira CS brand.

In 2014 Trevira will continue to promote expansion of its global business with the help of its international network of representatives. The company is also participating again at events focussing on high value products for the contract market in Asia, Middle East and the USA.

With marketing activities for Trevira CS the focus is on supporting direct customers and downstream partners. 2014 will see the Trevira CS Club into its third year, by now well established and held in high esteem by customers. Some 100 of them have registered for 2014. Gold and Silver partners will be announced during a customer event at Heimtextil.

Trevira CS innovations: New looks, functions and applications

Today the Trevira CS brand stands not only for the flame retardancy function of home textiles, it also represents textiles that stand out from the competition by virtue of their design and the new opportunities they offer in terms of end use. The materials embody the innovative powers of companies as they cooperate along the textile chain to create new product. Trevira actively supports them in the process.

Trevira itself is continuously adapting its product portfolio in yarns and upstream products to market requirements. Many products stem from close collaboration and agreement with yarn and fabric customers.

The demand for finer qualities is steadily increasing and Trevira is meeting this by expanding both its capacity and the range of flame retardant microyarns, used in Trevira CS warp knitted articles with a suede effect for upholstery, special weaves for the exhibition construction sector and extremely fine velours. Great emphasis continues to fall on spun-dyed yarns – firstly for ecological reasons, but also since they offer more durability and opportunities for innovative design. Manufacturers have at their disposal a wide range of flame retardant filaments in around 20 standard colours. The trend towards functional materials as well is unchecked. Hybrid yarns for the thermal bonding of materials continue to grow in importance. These are used mainly for interior sun screening, but they are now found more and more in applications outside classic furnishing textiles.

Spinners, twisters and manufacturers of fancy yarns are extending and enhancing the palette for Trevira CS with numerous fibre and filament yarns, thus contributing with their experience and customer-centred developments to the almost inexhaustible choice of raw materials that result in highly creative surface developments. In the process they are widening the options for high-value Trevira CS textiles in terms of construction and design. Fabric manufacturers have the total spectrum at their disposal. Ranging from standard yarns, to elastic, shrink, chenille, KdK, and mélange yarns, up to innovative paper yarns.

In recent years it has become very evident, particularly in fabric manufacture, that looks are being achieved with Trevira CS qualities that come very close to natural materials such as linen, silk, wool and cotton. Currently there are materials available on the market with both the look and the handle similar to high quality natural materials. To some degree they exhibit even the fine character of apparel fabrics and meet the demands of the upmarket private sector.

Trevira CS textiles also play a large part in opening up new areas of application for textiles. They are now used in the sound absorbency and sunscreen sectors, areas where architects are at present always on the lookout for fresh functional solutions. Sound absorbency can be achieved from stiffened materials made from hybrid yarns, from new 3D knitted fabrics and from innovative constructions. But existing articles too are maintaining their entry into soundproofing, in panels, wall dividers and decorative elements.

At Heimtextil Trevira is displaying a whole series of fabric developments in products from its yarn partners. This year Trevira has for the first time asked partners at the yarn stage to exhibit their latest product in the form of textile material. Fabrics are on show either as commercial articles or as development samples.

New developments in sustainability

Post-consumer recycling: return and recycling of Trevira CS fabrics

In 2013 Trevira launched a recycling concept for used Trevira CS fabrics. The end of their useful life does not mean that Trevira CS textiles end up in the rubbish dump or in the incinerator for thermal recycling. On the contrary, they are a valuable raw material and within the framework of a return and recycle concept they can proceed on to appropriate new uses.

Since the textiles are manufactured from a single raw material, 100% Trevira CS polyester, this is a favourable precondition for recycling. Possible end uses are, for instance, materials for insulation or soundproofing – which could include applications in acoustic panels for office and conference areas, hotels and restaurants as well as for public buildings.

The concept foresees that at the end Trevira will take back fabrics consisting of 100% flame retardant Trevira fibre and filament yarns when their useful life is over. The fabrics need to be clean, dry and free of contaminations and coatings. They must also have passed the Trevira CS trademark test, as the identification of the fabrics and the permission to participate in the recycling scheme is handled via the trademark approval number registered at Trevira.

All players in the textile chain, from the yarn producer to the end user, will be informed that used Trevira CS textiles will be taken back by Trevira. For example, when refurbishing a hotel, the hotel owner/manager or the contracting furnisher can send the old Trevira CS fabrics back to Trevira. These fabrics are put on stock and, when the required quantities have been collected, proceed on to mechanical processing and recycling.

To ensure sustainability in implementing the recycling process, Trevira will take into account the location of the end consumer. Fabrics sent in by companies in the European area are collected in the Trevira production plant in Bobingen (S. Germany), for onward transmission to recycling, while sensible local arrangements will be made for textiles outside Europe.

Trevira CS Book of Green Ideas

Ecology in general and the environmental friendliness of textiles, particularly with regard to their manufacture, are issues that continue to be much debated topics in the market, especially for architects and interior furnishers, a significant target group for Trevira CS.

Within the framework of the Club concept Trevira is launching at Heimtextil a publication on sustainability, which has been jointly compiled with 12 suppliers in the Gold and Silver range. The “Book of Green Ideas” is aimed at users in the contract field such as furnishers, architects and designers. But it will also be of interest to institutions and associations and to the trade press.

Available in German and English, the Book is intended both to provide information about the ecological advantages of Trevira CS products, and also portray the commitment of Trevira and its partners to sustainable activities. It presents the Trevira CS product, Trevira itself as manufacturer, and a dozen of the most important fabric suppliers.

Following Heimtextil it is planned to send copies to over 10,000 architects and interior specifiers worldwide.

Fabric Creativity Competition No. 2: Winners

For the second time Trevira invited suppliers of Trevira CS fabrics to take part in a creativity competition within the framework of the Club concept. The competition gives all fabric makers and suppliers with particularly innovative Trevira CS developments the chance to secure bonus points – and with these the right to more services. Every entrant receives a reward. This year 120 fabrics were entered and from these a panel of three experts selected 10 winning articles and 5 qualities that received special recognition. Criteria for the classification were degree of innovation, technical execution, suitability for the contract market and trend setting.

Panel members were Prof. Bettina Göttke-Krogmann (Burg Giebichenstein – Kunsthochschule Halle), Cornelia Markus-Diedenhofen (Markus-Diedenhofen interior designer, Reutlingen) and Natalija Zimmermann (interior designer and stylist, BZ.Bildung-Beratung-Innovation, Leipzig).

Winners

Backhausen GmbH: Article: LINE CIRCLES MC420A

LINE CIRCLES reflects the Backhausen tradition of developing fabrics jointly with contemporary artists – this material emerged from cooperation with the world-famous firm of architects Coop Himmelb(l)au. Alongside the design, it has above all a precision and high quality in the working that catches the eye. This elegant upholstery material has been developed, using an atlas weave. The fine yarns and high weave density make possible the precise lines. As an optical illusion the 3D effect displays a contemporary design inspired by the Jugendstil movement in finely chiselled graphics.
LINE CIRCLES has an interesting close-up effect due to its finely worked weave pattern. This is countered by its exciting impact at a distance, where the interplay of lines simulates a moiré effect. The fabric is available double-sided as decorative or upholstery material.

Création Baumann AG: Article: SERENO 728

A slightly transparent, soft curtain material with the look and feel of spun silk. The very fine-grain handle, natural sheen and a pleasantly soft drape convey quality and elegance and evoke apparel fabric. The high warp density gives the plain colour a lively depth that particularly brings out the strong modern tones. Transparency and screening play equal roles, so that the fabric can be used in a variety of ways. The delicate structure of the lines supports the interplay of light of SERENO. Taken as whole, SERENO should be seen as the new uni quality with future prospects.
The article is suited both for residential and contract use, and would also work well as curtain fabric in hotels in combination with a blackout material. SERENO comes in 35 colours and 320 cm width.

FIDIVI Tessitura Vergnano S.p.A. Artikel: CLASS natté

The first impact of CLASS natté comes mainly from its wool-like character and natural appearance. The mélange quality stands for the “ideal architects fabric”“ and comes in 27 shades. With a 75,000 Martindale rate, CLASS natté is a hardwearing upholstery fabric, ideally suited for the office and transport sectors. A restrained sheen and wool-like handle underpin the clean and naturally elegant impact of the fabric and widen its range of applications. It can be used in the hotel sector, as a bed-throw, for instance, or in combination with other fabrics as a border.

Kinnasand GmbH: Article: UP AND DOWN 6703

The combination of two innovative elements in production design supplies the special charm of UP AND DOWN, resulting in a very modern and contemporary look. This comes on the one hand from the use of a filament non-woven, giving it an unusual paper-like feel. On the other hand, it is the very generous Degradé repeats in ikat-style that challenge our viewing habits.
UP AND DOWN presents a batik-like gradient from colour a white background. This colour process is seen in the centre of the material and is bordered by a grey shade that merges with restraint on both sides. Available in 3 colours, 150 cm width and for use as panel, roller blind or curtain material in the contract and residential sectors.

Lelièvre: Artikel: CUBA 4213

A heavy decorative fabric suited for cushions, curtains, upholstery and for wall coverings. The high-low structure accentuates the retro design particularly well, recalling the floral style of the fifties. The high warp density, fine sheen and pleasant feel convey quality traditionally associated with silk damask. The colouring – here the combination of beige with bright orange – lends further emphasis to the dynamic of the pattern.
Modern, extravagant, vital – CUBA heralds a new generation of damask fabrics.

Gebr. Munzert GmbH & Co. KG: Article: CS ORIGAMI 270801 colour70

The decorative fabric ORIGAMI is a three-dimensional weave, its design inspired by the Japanese origami technique. The striking 3D effects are produced by an innovative manufacturing process that delivers special fold patterns, which are pre-set in the greige material using the Jacquard technique. The high-low structure gives the fabric a concise shadow effect, emphasising the effect of plasticity. The edges and lines stand out in their colours, supplying a highly graphic impact to the textile image.
The material is worked with extreme precision and is double-sided with a relatively high degree of opaqueness. Its three-dimensional surface structure means it is destined for use in soundproofing. The very decorative features of ORIGAMI also make it suitable for use in curtains, room dividers, panels, wall coverings or cushion covers – in hotels, offices or public buildings.

RUBELLI S.p.A.: Article: LACCA 30098

The damask is an all-over pattern, marked by a select interplay of light-dark shades that create surface nuances with a look similar to that of varnish. The change from dull to shiny structures in metallic tones creates the impression of patina, giving the fabric a unique vintage look.  LACCA is double-sided and has a pleasant feel and loose drape.
Implemented in damask, the unusual design and metallic appearance of LACCA ensure it is destined to set the textile tone in modern architecture, alongside glass, concrete and steel. Nonetheless, LACCA will not fail to make its impact in classical surroundings as a splendid damask.
Suitable for the contract market, for instance in hotel rooms, but also for the discerning residential sector.

Sahco Hesslein GmbH & Co. KG (D): Article: IRISA 2630

This elegant decorative fabric IRISA fascinates with its fantastic interplay of colours that make their impact in their iridescence and moiré effect. The look has its basis in the use of two identical transparent fabrics, which combine to make a double-layer material, connected only by some weave points. The brightly coloured article captivates with a delicately nuanced Degradé in four merging shades. Using a black warp lends additional depth to the tones. A restrained underlying stripe structure, only visible at the second look, heightens the interplay of denseness and transparency. IRISA is available in 330 cm width and comes in 5 additional, delicately coordinated multicolour shades. The fabric has a voluminous, smooth drape and generous repeat and is particularly suited to strike elegant notes in the residential sector, as well as in the contract market.

Svensson Markspelle: Artikel: KEY 3524

A timeless furniture upholstery fabric that recalls natural linen with its natural feel and pearly appearance. Attractively plain in effect, the article is marked by a certain finesse in its textile structure. The use of a black yarn creates a shadow effect that emphasises the high-low structure of the plain weave, while the complementary colours evoke a changeant effect, giving the fabric an almost velvet appearance. KEY is a fine example of a “faux uni“ and has many possible end uses.
Its special charm lies in its aesthetic of simplicity. The result is that it can be used both in rustic and modern contexts and would go particularly well with wood, metal or concrete. Whether as an upholstery fabric for conference seating or as a heavy curtain fabric – KEY always convinces with its reduced appearance that is nonetheless one of cosiness. It is available in 30 colours.

Velours Blafo: Article: SATURNE 7510, Caramel 119

A velours with the mohair velvet look, with an elegant sheen. The fabric is not piece-dyed, but colour woven, with the black binding thread lending depth and a lively surface to the shimmering beige. SATURNE has a markedly pleasing handle and hardly marks at all.
The heavy upholstery fabric comes in 23 colours and is suitable for applications exposed to intensive use. It would also be appropriate for those where a very heavy curtain fabric is required. While totally suited to the contract market, the material is also very well placed for residential use due to its cosy impact.

Special recognition

DINA/VANELLI TEKSTIL SAN.TIC.A.S.: Article: CS LINSES TIMOTHY 1-MC453

An article inspired by fashion with the appearance of a softly flowing apparel fabric in wool. The unusual pattern is based on a dull/shiny effect and a certain “hazy look”. The generously made Jacquard has a hand-made effect – elegant and extravagant. With its restrained elegance the pattern can adapt to many furnishing roles. The pleasant handle is especially noteworthy, as it emphasises the effect of luxury.
CS LINSES TIMOTHY can be used as curtain and decorative fabric for accessories in the hotel and in the upmarket residential sector. It comes in 315 cm width/height.

Lodetex s.p.a.: Article: LINDA CS (Tinto Pezza) 22316

A curtain with very large repeat pattern, over 320 cm in width. An ingenious structure that alternates between plain and leno weave creates surfaces with varying degrees of transparency. The fabric has a wonderful drape and makes a dull, elegant impact. The pixel structure of a floral motif lends a modern look to the traditional curtain. The special nature of the design is best visible when backlit before a window – the motif emerges and changes according to the light intensity.

Gaetano Rossini Srl: Article: 220912.01.00

Usually found in the technical textiles sector, this three-dimensional knitted fabric makes an impression of comfort with its dual tones and special colouring and can be used for a variety of applications in interior furnishing and decoration. Its sound absorbency is an additional bonus. The honeycomb structure has both a technical and natural appearance and takes up the trend to reconcile the contrasts in these fields. With this article the user can investigate quite new design possibilities, which take into account technically clean and yet elegant, comfortable features.

The fabric is particularly suited for wall coverings or for eyelet scarves due to its stable structure. It could well be used as upholstery for furniture with organic shapes in a tense balance between technical weave and natural look.

Saum & Viebahn GmbH & Co. KG: Artikel: MANHATTAN 622241 40305

A contemporary upholstery fabric in the classic mould. It has a nice feel, which derives from use of a voluminous chenille yarn, and which is brought discretely into play by an apparently plaiting technique in the weave.
The variety in colour tones fascinates, both in contrasts and like with like. The fabric has a lively surface, its reds and blues giving an effect of iridescence. In the light the material develops a fine interplay of light/dark, caused by warm/cold contrasts in the colouration.
MANHATTAN makes a fine basis for combinations with Jacquards and patterned fabrics – and is also suitable for accessories such as cushions etc. It could have many applications in the contract sector. Its softness has an effect of great comfort: hence it will find its way into the private residential market.

Weyermann Technical Textiles GmbH & Co. KG: Article: TM272/89 3-D Fabric White

Due to its special firmness this 3D fabric can be freely hung anywhere, thus serving variously as room divider, roller blind or panel.
The 3D effect is achieved by using a filling weft, which enhances sound absorbency at the same time.
The stripe-shaped high-low structure has a classic discreet effect, giving an appearance of cleanness and high quality.
