Indorama Germany GmbH donates €33,500 for the victims of the flood disaster in Germany

Financial support for projects in Bad Münstereifel, Jünkerath, and Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler

Indorama Germany GmbH is donating a total of €33,500 to help the victims affected by the flood disaster that hit western Germany on 14 and 15 July 2021. Half of the donations came from the employees of the four companies that belong to Indorama Germany: Indorama Ventures Polymers Germany GmbH, PHP Fibers GmbH, Trevira GmbH, and UTT GmbH & Co. KG. Indorama Germany then doubled the employees’ donations.

These funds are used to support four specific projects in the affected regions: the children’s day-care centre for inclusion ‘Magische 12’ in Bad Münstereifel with €10,000, the youth facility ‘Kick’ in Bad Münstereifel with €10,000, the community playground in Jünkerath with €5,000, and the Levana special school in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler with €8,500.

Jochen Boos, Managing Director of Indorama Germany, said ‘We are delighted that so many of our employees have responded to our appeal and made generous donations. We believe that this is an important sign of solidarity.’

In November, Managing Director of Indorama Germany, Klaus Holz, and Communications Manager of Trevira GmbH, Dr Isabell Krieger, visited the projects on site and presented the symbolic cheques to those responsible for the projects. Managing Director of Indorama Germany, Klaus Holz, said ‘We have decided to support specific projects and wanted to personally find out about the current situation of those affected. We are happy to see that our donations arrive where they are urgently needed and used sensibly.’

Project 1: €10,000 for the day-care centre for inclusion ‘Magische 12’, Bad Münstereifel

The children’s day-care centre for inclusion ‘Magische 12’ is located in the municipality of Bad Münstereifel. Here, the otherwise tranquil river Erft turned into a torrential flood and caused, among other things, massive damage to the building, its interior, and the outdoor play area of the ‘Magische 12’ day-care centre. This facility is run by the Bad Münstereifel Association for Child Protection, a registered non-profit organisation. The coordinator at the Bad Münstereifel Child Protection Association showed the damaged premises to the Managing Director of Indorama Germany, Klaus Holz, and the Trevira Communications Manager, Dr Isabell Krieger. It remains to be seen whether the building can be renovated at all due to the fact that the soil under the foundation slab was washed away. The entire furnishings had to be torn out and disposed of. The recently redesigned outdoor play area was also severely damaged. At present, the children are accommodated in different premises. With its donation of €10,000 for this project, Indorama Germany GmbH would like to help ensure that the children can return to their original location with new furnishings as soon as possible.

Project 2: €10,000 for the youth facility ‘Kick’, Bad Münstereifel

The youth facility ‘Kick’ is also directly located on the river Erft in Bad Münstereifel and run by the Bad Münstereifel Association for Child Protection. Due to its location in the basement, the rooms of this facility were under water up to the ceiling. Here, the Erft had come in through one window and gone out on the other side. In this facility, the entire furnishings also had to be disposed of and nothing could be salvaged. With its donation of €10,000, Indorama Germany GmbH would like to see young people from the area return to their newly refurbished youth centre in the near future.

Volker Haas, coordinator at the Bad Münstereifel Child Protection Association, said ‘On behalf of the Board and our employees, I would like to thank Mr Holz and Dr Krieger as well as all employees of the four companies again for their most generous donation! Here in Bad Münstereifel, the Child Protection Association is currently under severe strain with our day-care centre and youth work. A lot is demanded of the Board and the administration, of all employees and of course, of the children and young people we care for! Temporary accommodation, where an orderly coexistence is only slowly emerging and where work equipment is only partially available, requires courage and perseverance. In this situation, having the likes of Indorama Germany by our side leads to a sense of optimism and hope for a better and more secure future. We depend on donations like those from Indorama Germany to survive this crisis both organisationally and materially. We are optimistic that we will be able to move back into our fully equipped facilities and offices at the end of next year.’

Project 3: €5,000 for the community playground in Jünkerath, Gerolstein municipality

The community of Jünkerath is part of the Gerolstein municipality in the Vulkaneifel district. Here, the small river Kyll turned into a torrential flood in a very short time due to the emergency opening of the Kronenburg dam. As a result, the playground was completely under water and the playground equipment was severely damaged. In a face-to-face meeting, Norbert Bischof, the local mayor of Jünkerath, showed pictures of the flood disaster to the Managing Director of Indorama Germany GmbH, Klaus Holz, and the Communications Manager of Trevira GmbH, Dr Isabell Krieger, and told them about the incidents and the subsequent clean-up operations. With its donation of €5,000, Indorama Germany GmbH would like to help rebuild the playground at another location in the community that is less prone to flooding. Mr Holz presented the cheque to Mayor Norbert Bischof and to two members of the local advisory council, Regina Bullermann-Lentz and Torsten Schluckebier.

Norbert Bischof, the mayor of Jünkerath, said ‘We, in the small community of Jünkerath, are honoured by the generosity and commitment shown by Indorama Germany. It also fills us with pride that Mr Holz, as the managing director, came here to present the cheque in person. On behalf of the community and all of its citizens, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Indorama Germany. We’ll be sure to put this donation to good use as we plan to build a new playground for our children.’

Project 4: €8,500 for the Levana special school, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler

The action group ‘Kinder in Not’, a registered non-profit organisation for children in need, based in Neustadt (Wied), supports numerous projects worldwide and has also set up a fund for the victims of the floods in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Specific projects are supported as part of this initiative. Indorama Germany GmbH has decided to donate €8,500 to the Levana School for children with special needs in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler via the action group. As a result, a total of €18,500 will be transferred to the school by the ‘Kinder in Not’ action group. The Levana School is a special school with a focus on holistic development and development of motor skills. In Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, the river Ahr became a raging torrent and caused considerable damage to the buildings of the Levana School and its facilities. At the moment, the pupils are therefore accommodated in Neuwied, which is much further away. In addition, a pupil and an employee of the facility tragically lost their lives on the night of the floods. It is currently still unclear whether the school can be renovated or whether it has to be demolished. With its donation, Indorama Germany GmbH would like to help ensure that the children will be able to return to a new and refurbished facility as soon as possible.

The acting headmistress of the Levana special school, Kathrin Römermann, said ‘We would like to thank Indorama Germany very much for their generous donation. It is important for the children traumatized by the flood disaster to be able to return to the Ahrweiler district as soon as possible. With the help of Indorama Germany, the ‘Kinder in Not’ action group, and other donations, we will hopefully soon get a little closer to this goal.’
