Land Use
Man-made fibres relieve the use of farmland and thus contribute towards sustainability without having a negative effect on food supplies.
The manufacture of one tonne of wool fibres needs enormous pastures; cotton requires large agricultural areas. Man-made fibre production does not require any agricultural land, and its land use is in direct inverse proportion to its yield:
- 1% of the landmass is needed to produce 65% of the worldwide chemical fibre demand.
- 8% of the landmass is enough to harvest 33% of the demanded cotton fibres.
- 91% of the landmass is needed to supply only 2% of wool fibres.
