Managing resources responsibly

We owe it to the next generation

For Indorama Ventures, a clear commitment to sustainable energy policies, along with responsible management of natural resources, is a central element of company policy.

“Through reducing our energy usage and our use of resources, we actively seek out possibilities to minimise our CO2 emissions.” *

Indorama Ventures procedures and practices demonstrate its commitment to this policy every day.

Land Use

Man-made fibres relieve the use of farmland and thus contribute towards sustainability without having a negative effect on food supplies.

The manufacture of one tonne of wool fibres needs enormous pastures; cotton requires large agricultural areas. Man-made fibre production does not require any agricultural land, and its land use is in direct inverse proportion to its yield:

  • 1% of the landmass is needed to produce 65% of the worldwide chemical fibre demand.
  • 8% of the landmass is enough to harvest 33% of the demanded cotton fibres.
  • 91% of the landmass is needed to supply only 2% of wool fibres.

Crude oil usage

Currently, less than 1 per cent of the crude oil produced globally is employed in the global manufacture of man-made fibres.

Water usage

Consumption of enormous amounts of water – primarily for the artificial irrigation of cotton fields – is ecologically unsustainable.

Only a small amount of water is needed to manufacture polyester.

Through increasing the proportion of spun-dyed products, Indorama Ventures helps save energy which is no longer required for post-production dyeing, which also results in less dye-contaminated effluent.

Production effluent is conducted to the Guben treatment plant with no pre-treatment in two flows of differing toxic concentration. The treatment plant is used to capacity and can produce the needed electricity.

Saving Energy

Guben photovoltaic plant

Indorama Ventures achieves massive savings in energy and CO2 emissions thanks to its continuous production processes; the polymerisation process is in part directly followed by fibre spinning, thus avoiding the production of intermediates (chips).

Through improvements in production processes, the COD (chemical oxygen demand) content in process effluents is monitored and continuously decreased.

Energy created in the combustion of hydrocarbons reduces the use of fossil fuels by generating process energy.

Bobingen photovoltaic plant

At Bobingen and Guben, Indorama Ventures provides roof areas for solar energy panels and thus helps to increase the share of renewable energies in its total energy production.
